Collection of Traditional Costumes of the Peoples of Europe

The Collection of traditional costumes of the peoples of Europe contains mostly individual items (aprons, caps, belts, scarves, shirts) and to a lesser extent sets of clothes. The initial core consists of objects from the ethnographic collections of the National Museum, but mostly from the Berger Collection, which was acquired before the museum was founded, as well as the one bequeathed by Salomon Berger, containing pieces of textiles from North Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Albania. In the Interwar period, a significant source of acquisitions was the Kaptol fair in Zagreb. The only field research during which the Collection was replenished was conducted by Branimir and Marijana Gušić in Montenegro during the 1930s and 1950s. In addition to the mentioned countries, the Collection also contains textiles from Austria, Greece, Georgia, Kosovo, Hungary, Russia, Serbia and Switzerland. Older materials were often not accompanied by proper cataloging, so important information remained unrecorded and, in many cases, reduced to only the name of the object or an indication of origin. According to the collection policy of the Museum, the Collection is replenished only by donated items. The Collection contains about 2,900 objects.
